A custom-built Medibus is set to launch in the rural and remote communities across the Hunter and New England regions in New South Wales to improve access to diabetes care, according to the Australian Government.
The Medibus will function as a mobile health clinic staffed by a specialist multidisciplinary team including endocrinologists, a diabetes educator, an Aboriginal health worker, a dietitian, and a podiatrist.
Patients can access the Medibus through a referral by a general practitioner or other healthcare provider.
The government said Diabetes disproportionately impacts those in low socio-economic communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who are three times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
